10 is the very first two-digit number โ€” and turning 10 is the first birthday where your age needs TWO digits. You'll be double-digits all the way until you turn 100!

We use ten digits (0โ€“9) and group everything into tens, hundreds and thousands โ€” probably because humans have 10 fingers! In the number 10, the "1" means one ten and the "0" means zero ones. That's called place value.

Computers count using only 0s and 1s (that's "binary"). In binary, "10" doesn't mean ten โ€” it means TWO! And 1010 in binary equals ten (8 + 2). There are 10 kinds of people: those who understand binary, and those who don't. ๐Ÿ˜‰

When Gauss was about your age, his teacher told the class to add up every number from 1 to 100 โ€” expecting it to take forever. Gauss did it in seconds: he paired 1+100, 2+99, 3+98โ€ฆ fifty pairs of 101 = 5,050! It's the same triangle-number trick as 1+2+3+4=10.

Ada Lovelace

Way back in the 1840s, Ada wrote the world's very first computer program โ€” for a machine that hadn't even been built yet. She's called the first programmer ever, and computers still run on the 0s and 1s from our "10 = 2" binary fact.

Archimedes

One of the greatest thinkers of all time. He worked out how levers and circles work, got amazingly close to the value of ฯ€ over 2,000 years ago, and supposedly ran down the street yelling "Eureka!" ("I found it!") when he solved a puzzle in the bath.

Srinivasa Ramanujan

A self-taught genius from India who spotted number patterns nobody else could see. When a friend called taxi number 1729 "boring," Ramanujan instantly said it was special: it's the smallest number you can make by adding two cubes two different ways โ€” 1ยณ+12ยณ and 9ยณ+10ยณ. (There's a 10 hiding inside!)

Euclid

Known as the "Father of Geometry." Over 2,000 years ago he wrote a book called The Elements that explained shapes, angles and proofs so clearly it was used as a school textbook for the next 2,000 years. Every decagon and triangle traces back to him.

Emmy Noether

One of the most important mathematicians of the 1900s. She discovered a deep rule linking symmetry to the laws of physics โ€” even Albert Einstein was a huge fan of her brilliant ideas.

The Secret: Neither large shape is a true triangle! The top edge (hypotenuse) is slightly bent. One bends in, the other bends out. That tiny difference in space is exactly the size of the "missing" square. It's an illusion!

The Barber Paradox

In a village, the barber shaves all those, and only those, who do not shave themselves. The question is: Who shaves the barber?

  • If the barber shaves himself, he breaks his rule (he only shaves people who DON'T shave themselves).
  • If he DOESN'T shave himself, he falls into the group that the barber must shave. So he must shave himself!
